Child Support and School Expenses
Posted: August 23, 2010

As school approaches and the initial school costs mount (student fees, athletic fees, uniform fees, supplies, clothes, etc. etc. etc.), it is a good time to take a look at your Order of Child Support and see if your former spouse is required to assist with these expenses. We find that often, parents are entitled to some reimbursement for these fees and expenses but forget about it or figure it is not worth it to ask, or don’t want to spend the time putting together the paperwork to compute what is due.

If your Order of Child Support provides for some reimbursement for these items, it really is not that difficult to keep track of it and request reimbursement. If you or someone you know is familiar with Excel, just create spreadsheet and keep track of the expenses on that program. If you can’t use Excel just keep a ledger book with the expenses. Keep receipts! Make sure you comply with the timelines for making a claim for reimbursement, as many Child Support Orders have deadlines to make a claim.

It is best to make a formal but professional demand for the reimbursement. If you do that and it does not work, it sets you up for receiving attorney fees if you have to hire an attorney to get the money.

If your Order of Child Support does not provide for reimbursement for these expenses, be sure to ask your attorney to request them if you go in for a modification of the support; which you can do every two years if you wish.
