Divorce and Health Insurance
Posted: February 25, 2010

A divorce can result in a spouse losing health insurance benefits if she or he was insured under the other spouse's employer sponsored benefits. It is important to understand what your rights are under state and federal law. Here's a very helpful website in Washington State that will give you the information: http://www.insurance.wa.gov/consumers/health/index.shtml. The Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner will guide you in this area by informing you how to obtain health insurace, to to compare plans, what to do if you are denied coverage. The site explains clearly what you rights are to continue health insurance after a divorce for a certain time period as long as you can pay the premium.
