Parental Alienation, What Is It?
Posted: February 3, 2010

Some children, after a divorce, reject a parent they were emotionally bonded with during the marriage. This rejection is sometimes caused by the other parent who purposely diminishes the role of the other parent or a parent who actively destroys the bond between the child and the formerly loved parent. This is called parental alienation and it is very damaging to children according to Dr. Richard Warshak, author of Divorce Poison. An internationally known psychologist who specializes in parental alienation, Dr. Warshak believes that parents need to recognize alienating behaviors in themselves so they can modify their behavior and become better parents. In addition, he focuses on helping the alienated parent. Dr. Warshak’s has an excellent website with suggestions and materials that are useful to parents caught in the parental alienation web. His mission is to help people understand what factors play a role in reconciliation with an alienated child, and to give hope to the many parents who are suffering the loss of contact with their children.
