Parenting Through Divorce
Posted: January 29, 2010
There are many books and guides to help parents navigate a divorce with children of all ages. An internet search resulted in over 15 recent books to review or check out from the library. In reading several different books, I have discovered some themes. The most important is to make sure children remain the highest priority and for the parents to move slowly if possible through the process so children have time to adapt to the changes. Manage your stress in a healthy way so the children learn from your skills. Do not blame or disparage the other parent to your children. Listen to your children, acknowledge and accept their feelings. Try to remember that children often blame themselves for the divorce. Seek help from books, counselors, and school personnel. Children do experience grief and pain at the loss of the family unit that had two parents and children all living together but if the children do not also lose the love and attention of their parents, they can be happy again.
